Volume vs Classic Lashes — What's the Difference?

Posted by Lash Heaven on

The Fundamental Difference

The core difference between classic and volume lashes comes down to one thing: how many extensions are applied per natural lash.

Classic lashes: One extension applied to one natural lash. Clean, simple, natural-looking.

Volume lashes: Multiple ultra-fine extensions (called a fan) applied to one natural lash. Fuller, more dramatic, more customisable.

Classic Lashes — The Details

Classic lash application is the foundation of lash artistry. Using a single extension per natural lash, it creates a mascara-like effect that enhances without overwhelming. The extensions used in classic work are typically thicker — 0.12 to 0.20 — to give each lash visible definition.

Classic is best for:

  • Clients wanting a natural, everyday or mascara look
  • First-time lash clients who are nervous about going too dramatic
  • Clients with a good number of healthy natural lashes
  • Bridal clients wanting subtle enhancement for photographs

Volume Lashes — The Details

Volume lashing involves hand-crafting fans of ultra-fine extensions (typically 0.03 to 0.10) and placing them on each natural lash. Because the individual extensions are so fine, multiple can be applied without exceeding the safe weight limit for the natural lash.

The result is incredible fullness, density, and texture that classic simply cannot achieve. Volume is where lash artistry becomes truly creative.

Volume is best for:

  • Clients wanting a full, glamorous look
  • Clients with sparse or fine natural lashes who want density
  • Clients who've had classic lashes and want to level up
  • Anyone wanting a long-lasting, low-maintenance full look

Mega Volume

Mega volume takes the technique further — using fans of 10 or more ultra-fine extensions (0.03 to 0.06) for an incredibly dense, dramatic effect. This is the most advanced technique and requires significant skill to execute safely.

Which Thickness Should You Use?

Technique Recommended Thickness
Classic 0.12, 0.15, 0.18, 0.20
Russian Volume (2–6D) 0.05, 0.06, 0.07, 0.10
Mega Volume (6D+) 0.03, 0.05, 0.06

The Weight Rule

The most important principle in lash safety: the total weight of extensions applied to a natural lash must never exceed the weight the natural lash can comfortably support. This is why volume fans use ultra-fine lashes — many thin extensions together weigh the same as one thicker extension, but create far more visual impact.

Lash Heaven's Recommendation

For classic work, we recommend our Divine Silk Classic and Intense Silk Classic ranges in 0.12–0.15 thickness. For volume, our Divine Silk Volume and Intense Silk Volume in 0.05, 0.06, and 0.07 are among the most popular choices with professional lash artists across the UK.
