Have you ever had a client come back for an infill and wondered why some extensions have grown out dramatically while others have barely moved? Or why a perfectly attached extension sometimes seems to vanish before their next appointment?
I get asked about this all the time, and here's the truth: the answer isn't always your adhesive or your technique. More often than not, it's simply the natural lash cycle doing exactly what it's supposed to do.
Understanding how natural lashes grow, rest and shed is one of the fundamentals I come back to again and again with the artists I mentor. Once it clicks, it changes how you assess retention, plan infills and talk to your clients — for the better.
The Three Stages of the Natural Lash Cycle
Our natural lashes don't all grow on the same schedule. Every individual lash is moving through its own cycle, which is exactly why we shed a few lashes each day rather than all at once.
The lash cycle has three stages:
- Anagen — Growth
- Catagen — Transition
- Telogen — Resting and shedding
A full cycle varies a fair bit from person to person, and even follicle to follicle, so treat these timings as a guide rather than a strict schedule.
1. Anagen: The Growth Phase (~30–45 days)
Anagen is the active growth stage. The lash is being produced from the follicle and getting longer — which is exactly why an extension on an anagen lash can look noticeably more grown-out by the time your client returns.
What this means for you as a lash artist: if you spot an extension that's grown quite far from the lash line, don't leave it just because the bond still looks solid. It's now sitting further along the natural lash or hanging on for its dear life.., which can throw it off balance, cause twisting, or put unnecessary leverage on that lash. Remove it and reapply fresh, in the correct position. It keeps the set looking sharp and protects the health of the natural lash underneath.
2. Catagen: The Transition Phase (~2–3 weeks)
Next comes Catagen. Active growth stops here, and the follicle starts to change as the lash shifts toward its resting phase. Extensions on lashes in this stage often show very little grow-out between appointments.
What this means for you as a lash artist: don't assume every extension with minimal grow-out is proof of amazing retention from your adhesive. Sometimes that natural lash simply wasn't in an active growth stage. It's a distinction worth making when you're assessing a client's retention — growth cycle plays just as much of a role as your application technique.
3. Telogen: The Resting Phase (~2–3 weeks)
Telogen is the resting stage. The mature lash is nearing the end of its cycle and will eventually shed, making way for the next lash to come through. Completely normal.
Sometimes an extension on a lash near the end of its cycle will release incredibly easily during an infill — you might even find the natural lash still attached to it without the client barely noticing. That doesn't automatically mean poor retention. It usually just means that lash was ready to go.
Why Clients Still Shed Lashes With Extensions
One of the most important things I tell every client: extensions don't stop natural shedding — nothing does. If an extension is bonded correctly, it simply travels through the natural lash cycle along with it. When that lash reaches the end of its cycle and sheds, the extension goes with it.
So when a client finds an extension with a natural lash attached, it isn't automatically something to worry about. Most of the time, they're just watching the natural cycle play out.
What the Lash Cycle Can Teach You About Retention
When you're assessing retention, look at the whole picture, not just one shed lash. Ask yourself:
- How much have the extensions grown out?
- Are extensions shedding without a natural lash attached?
- Are natural lashes attached to the extensions that have fallen?
- Is this normal shedding, or unusually heavy loss?
- Are there signs of poor attachment, stickies, or the wrong extension weight?
- Has anything changed in the client's routine since their last appointment?
Great retention was never about forcing every single extension to hold on indefinitely. Healthy retention means a secure bond that still lets the natural lashes carry on their normal growth and shedding cycle underneath.
A Practical Tip for Your Next Infill
When your client sits down, take a moment to actually look across the lash line at the different stages of growth in front of you.
If an extension has grown out significantly, remove it and reapply fresh, closer to the base, at a safe distance from the skin. If another has barely moved, remember the natural lash underneath may simply be in a slower or resting stage. And if a lash and its extension release together with no resistance, don't jump to blaming your application — that natural lash had likely just reached the end of its journey.
The more you understand the natural lash, the easier retention, infills and healthy placement become.

Your client's lashes are constantly growing, transitioning, resting and shedding — all at different times, all at once. As lash artists, our job was never to fight that process. It's to work with it.
Understanding the natural lash cycle helps you create cleaner infills, spot genuine retention problems, and — most importantly — protect the health of your client's natural lashes.
