Blue Lotus Oil: What It Is and How to Use It

Blue lotus has been a symbol of beauty and renewal for more than three thousand years. Today you're most likely to meet it as an oil: a scent you breathe in, a few drops massaged into skin, a slow moment at the end of the day. Here's what blue lotus actually is, what to expect from blue lotus oil, and how to make it part of your own ritual.

What is blue lotus?

Blue lotus is Nymphaea caerulea, the Egyptian blue water lily. Despite the name, it isn't a true lotus at all; it's a water lily that grew along the banks of the Nile.

The ancient Egyptians painted it on tomb walls, carved it into temple columns and wove it into garlands. The flower opens with the morning sun and closes at dusk, so it became a symbol of rebirth and the sun itself. That's why you'll still see blue lotus linked to meditation, intuition and ceremony today.

What is blue lotus oil?

Most blue lotus oils are a carrier oil infused or blended with the essence of the flower. Our Ritual Oils Blue Lotus Oil is 100% pure cold-pressed moringa oil with blue lotus essential oil, and nothing else: no fillers, no additives.

The carrier matters as much as the flower:

  • Moringa oil is pressed from the seeds of the Moringa oleifera tree. It's light, absorbs quickly and doesn't leave skin greasy.
  • It's naturally rich in oleic acid, the same fatty acid that makes olive oil feel so nourishing.
  • It's also known for keeping well, which is why it was prized by perfumers for centuries.
  • Blue lotus brings the scent: soft, floral and slightly sweet, with a calm, grounding quality.

The benefits of blue lotus oil

We'd rather be honest than promise miracles. Here's what you can genuinely expect:

  • Soft, hydrated skin. Moringa moisturises face, body and hair without feeling heavy.
  • A calming scent. Many people find the floral aroma helps them slow down and relax.
  • A ritual, not just a product. Pairing a scent with a habit (evening skincare, massage, meditation) can help your body recognise it's time to unwind.
  • Glide for facial tools. A few drops give a gua sha or roller the slip it needs.

Five ways to use blue lotus oil

  1. Evening face ritual. Warm half a dropper between your palms, breathe in deeply, then press it into clean, slightly damp skin.
  2. Gua sha or roller. Apply a thin layer first so the tool glides rather than drags.
  3. Massage. Use it alone or add a few drops to your usual massage oil for a softer, floral finish.
  4. Before meditation. Rub a drop between your hands and take three slow breaths before you sit.
  5. Ends of hair. Smooth a tiny amount through dry ends for shine.

Good to know

  • Blue lotus oil is for external use only.
  • Patch-test on your inner arm 24 hours before using it on your face.
  • Keep it out of your eyes.
  • Wearing lash extensions? Keep oils well away from the lash line. Oil breaks down lash adhesive and is one of the most common reasons extensions fall out early.
  • Store the bottle somewhere cool and dark, away from direct sunlight.

Complete the ritual: flowers and incense

Scent works best in layers. Pair your oil with the flower itself and a grounding incense to set the mood of the whole room.

Light your incense, warm a few drops of oil between your palms and breathe. That's the whole ritual.
