Top 5 Mistakes New Lash Artists Make (And How to Fix Them)

Every lash artist remembers their early days — the excitement, the nerves, and yes, the mistakes. The good news? Most beginner errors are completely fixable once you know what to look for. Here are the top five mistakes new lash artists make, and exactly how to correct them.

1. Using Too Much Adhesive

This is hands down the most common beginner mistake. When lash artists are nervous, there's a tendency to over-dip — loading the extension with too much glue in the hope that it will bond better.

The problem: Excess adhesive causes stickies (natural lashes bonding together), creates a clumpy, unnatural finish, and can lead to client discomfort or lash damage.

The fix: Dip just 1–2mm of the lash base into a fresh drop of adhesive. Work quickly and replace your adhesive drop every 20–30 minutes to maintain the right viscosity. Less is always more.

2. Skipping Proper Isolation

Isolation — separating one natural lash before applying an extension — is the foundation of safe lash work. Many beginners rush this step, especially when they're trying to work faster.

The problem: Extensions applied to multiple natural lashes cause them to fuse together. As those lashes grow at different rates, the bond pulls on each lash, causing breakage, patchy gaps, and client discomfort.

The fix: Slow down. Use your isolation tweezers to clearly separate one lash before every single application. It gets faster with practice, but never skip it.

3. Incorrect Placement on the Natural Lash

Extension placement matters enormously for both safety and longevity. Many new artists either place extensions too close to the skin or too far from the base.

The problem: Too close to the skin can cause irritation and damage the follicle. Too far from the base looks unnatural and the extension pops off quickly.

The fix: Aim to place the extension 0.5–1mm from the lash line — close enough to look seamless, far enough to avoid contact with the skin.

4. Poor Fan Structure in Volume Work

Volume lashing requires hand-made fans, and getting the structure right takes time. Beginners often make fans that are too closed, too wide, or unevenly distributed.

The problem: Poorly made fans look uneven and fluffy in the wrong way. They're also harder to apply cleanly, which affects retention.

The fix: Dedicate time to practising fans outside of client appointments — on a lash tile or strip. Aim for a symmetrical fan with a clean, closed base and evenly spaced lashes. Use 0.05 diameter lashes to start as they're forgiving and easy to handle.

5. Ignoring Retention Issues Instead of Diagnosing Them

When clients come back for infills and their lashes have dropped significantly, new artists often blame the glue — but retention problems are almost always technique-related.

The problem: Poor retention frustrates clients and damages your reputation as an artist. Common causes include incorrect adhesive storage, poor bonding due to oils or residue on natural lashes, or incorrect lash-to-skin distance.

The fix: Before every appointment, ensure natural lashes are thoroughly cleansed. Prime lashes before application to remove moisture and oils. Store your adhesive correctly — upright, sealed, away from light and humidity. And review your application technique: bond, placement, and drying time all play a role.

The Most Important Thing

Every great lash artist started exactly where you are now. The difference between those who improve quickly and those who plateau is reflection — regularly reviewing your work, seeking feedback, and being honest about what needs work.
