Lash Techniques Every Lash Artist Should Master
The beauty of the lash industry is that there’s never just one right way to do things. That’s what makes lash artistry so creative, personal, and constantly evolving.
Over the years, I’ve realised that every lash artist develops their own rhythm, style, and techniques. What works perfectly for one artist may not work for another — and that’s completely okay.
Your technique can change depending on your client’s natural lashes, whether it’s a full set or infill, classic or volume, your speed and experience, your setup and environment, and even your energy or mood that day.
As trends evolve and new methods emerge — especially now with social media and education more accessible than ever — it’s important to stay open-minded and keep refining your artistry. Here are some techniques every lash artist should know and experiment with throughout their journey.
Working in Zones
This is one of the most structured and precise techniques. Working in zones means dividing the lash line into sections using a lash map — for example: 8-9-10-11-10-9. This technique helps create better symmetry, balanced styling, more even coverage, and cleaner lash sets.
It’s especially useful when creating specific styling effects like cat-eye, doll-eye, or wispy looks. Many lash artists love zone lashing because it creates a more organised workflow and helps avoid uneven fullness between both eyes.
Lashing in Layers
Layering can completely change your lash game. This technique involves isolating and working through different lash layers separately. Many artists will tape up the top layer first so they can access the hidden lashes underneath more easily.
Why it’s helpful: better coverage, fuller-looking sets, easier isolation, improved retention, and cleaner results. The bottom layers are often the lashes newer artists miss — so mastering layers can instantly improve your work.
One important tip: be careful with your tape choice and removal technique to avoid damaging extensions or natural lashes.
Lash-by-Lash Technique
This is the detail-oriented perfectionist method. Instead of focusing on zones or layers first, you work lash by lash — carefully assessing each natural lash individually and applying extensions where needed.
This approach requires patience, precision, strong isolation skills, and attention to detail. It can be slower, but it often creates beautifully balanced and customised results.
The “Random” Technique
This sounds chaotic — but many experienced lash artists actually work this way naturally. Instead of following strict zones, you work wherever you visually see gaps, switching between layers, eyes, and areas freely.
This technique can work really well once your eyes become trained to spot imbalance and symmetry naturally. The key is maintaining harmony in lengths, layers, weight distribution, and styling flow — otherwise the set can look uneven or “stepped.” For creative lash artists, this method often feels the most natural and intuitive.
One Eye at a Time
Some lash artists prefer completing one eye before moving to the next. Others alternate between both eyes throughout the appointment. Neither is wrong.
Working one eye at a time can help you stay focused, keep your flow, work faster, and avoid losing track. The only thing to be mindful of is timing and balance — especially if clients open their eyes mid-appointment or time runs short. Always make sure both eyes end up looking equally full and balanced.
Start With the Difficult Areas First
Inner corners and outer corners can be the most challenging areas for many lash artists. That’s why some artists prefer tackling the tricky lashes first — while their focus is fresh, adhesive is performing well, and the client is still relaxed.
Once those areas are complete, the rest of the set often flows much more smoothly. This can also help reduce stress later in the appointment.
There Is No “Perfect” Technique
One of the biggest lessons in the lash industry is this: there’s no single correct way to lash. The best technique is the one that works for you, protects the natural lashes, creates beautiful results, keeps retention strong, feels sustainable for your body and workflow, and makes your clients happy.
The more experience you gain, the more your own unique style develops. And that’s where the artistry really begins.
Keep Learning & Stay Open-Minded
The lash industry evolves constantly. New trends, new products, new styling methods, online education — everything is changing fast. The most successful lash artists are usually the ones who never stop learning.
Experiment. Practise. Stay curious. Learn from others. Take courses. Watch new techniques. Refine your craft continuously.
Because becoming a great lash artist isn’t about copying someone else perfectly. It’s about developing your own artistry and confidence over time.
With love,
Sylvia xx
